Numerical and Experimental Aerodynamic Investigation of an S-Shaped Intermediate Compressor Duct With Bleed

Abstract A series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed to analyze the effects a rotor off-take bleed has on performance an intermediate compressor duct (ICD). To validate CFD results, comparison is made measurements obtained from experimental facility located at GKN Aerospace Engine Systems in Sweden. achieve deeper understanding flow physics, hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes/large eddy simulation (RANS/LES) for single operating condition. The capable predicting behavior when extracting large amount air through pipe, where improved prediction with simulation. ICD severely compromised increased as delivered downstream component highly disturbed. disturbed caused by extraction axial increasing incidence into low-pressure compressor’s outlet guide vanes (OGVs) resulting unfavorable velocity profiles ICD. This causes separate OGV blades, separation increases bleed. Furthermore, including full system, significant circumferential distortions observed, showing necessity integrated design.
